2011-01-01: COC - Nose Hill - easy, slow pace xc ski
Upon arrival conditions at Nose Hill looked packed and bare in spots. Some passing snowshoers indicated they saw good ski tracks further along but we felt apprehensive at the possibility of picking up grass and leaves and perhaps even running over rocks and such. So, a quick switch of plans and we headed over to Confederation Golf Course where we found wonderful conditions! A lot of people were skiing there today but with tracks criss-crossing all over the place there was plenty of room for everyone without running into each other. This is an awesome place for 2-3 hours of urban skiing when we've got fresh snow.

2011-01-06: EOC - Lovely River Valley Cycle with Studded Tires and Headlamps
Wow! Riding a bike through mushy snow and on ice is a lot of work! Five of us took a \"leisurely\" ride along the pathway, following the river along the north side most of the way, then crossed the ped bridge near the Edmonton Queen and stopped short of climbing the hill into Forest Heights. We returned the same way. A little over 14km round trip. We saw a few other bicycle fanatics on the trail, and I was both impressed and dismayed at how quickly they just blew right past me as I was working full-out to maintain a speed of 11km/hour.

Thanks to all who came out - it was an awesome time!

2011-01-09: EOC - Heavy Snowfall Celebration - Beginner/Easy Snowshoe at Terwillegar
I called this event a Heavy Snowfall Celebration because of the enormous dump of snow we got this weekend, and celebrate we did! Amazing snow, right in the city! Yay!

Thinking this would be a great opportunity for folks to try out snow shoeing, in the city, but with more mountain-like conditions, we set out. We stayed on some trail for a while, and then I challenged Larry to break trail cross-country for a while. I forgot to tell him that normally, you break trail for about 50-100 paces and then drop to the back so someone else can break trail for a while. Oops.

About 2/3 of the way through our trip, Jason discovered a perfect training hill, so we stopped for a few minutes and tried out descending and ascending the hill with the deep, powdery snow. Some made out better than others, but all had a great time!

Continuing on around the loop of Terwillegar Park, some of us partook of yet another fabulous training hill, while the others watched on. We then bee-lined it back to the cars after a three-hour outing.

Thanks to all who came out - we had a great time!!

2011-04-01: COC and EOC - Emu Wrestling Sponsored by SPEWF (South Pambula Emu Wrestling Federation)

Thanks to everyone who came out to a great day of emu wrestling with The COC and The SPEWF (South Pambula Emu Wrestling Federation). Things couldn't have gone better as a festive and brightly dressed crowd gathered at the Pambula Flocking Grounds. Bright sun, cool breeze and the smells of emu and candy floss in the air are just the things to get your heart thumping.

Unfortunately, all of our club members were eliminated in the early rounds. There were some good, close matches but precious little success by any of our team. Our most hopeful player was Mandy, along with her crew - Alberta Champ Emu Dolly and her pet pitbull Fluffy – who made it well into the third round before being knocked out by the Latvian team. And let’s all give a hand to James VB whose submission loss was not as bad as it looks on paper. Dana had quite the posse with her including Patrice, Aiaiaiai, Uhbgsfdgh and GOLGHOAS, plus 13 puppies and Elephant Effie. It was great to see Uhbgsfdgh again – most of us hadn’t seen her since hiking at Wolf 562 c. We were all very grateful to Angela (who joined with CCC to spectate only – chicken) for bringing all those wet wipes!

It seems that Australian emus are tougher than those from our part of the world, and we are never to speak of the terrible incident between the red team and Jorinda’s guests, Huey, Dewey and Louie. Joni’s guest, Roadrunner, tried valiantly to step in and break up the carnage… but… oh, there we go talking about it again. Even Dave and Allie’s Emu Wranglers were no match.

We were sorry to miss out on carpooling in David M’s awesome new one-ton diesel truck with crew cab. Lucky Veronica and Jorinda were David’s first-ever carpool-ees. Next time, it’s our turn! Everyone was impressed with Randy’s private plane, too. We’ll have to convince him to start using that for carpool – he was kind of snobbish about it this time.

We'd like to thank The SPEWF for being such great hosts. The half-time show was terrific. The audience was completely wowed by the echidna juggler in particular.

We hope we can get another group going to the 49th annual World Championship next year. Everybody practice your head-locks.

Brent and Rhonda

2011-04-07: EOC - River Valley spring ride.
Thank you for joining me on the River Valley Spring ride. As it was my first \"solo\" mission your were all great and fun to be with. I feel we all had a great time and looking back the hills weren't that bad. Brent, Rhonda, Maria, Josephine & Ben, everyone went that extra few kilometres off the map on our adventure up and over into Forrest heights, Thank you again for your sense of adventure. 2011-04-23: COC - Deer Ridge Trail - Slow Pace
A surprising amount of snow left on the trails today, unusual for this time of year. Still, a great hike for spring shoulder season. Wonderful company and fun afternoon!

2011-04-25: EOC - Whitemud Park Slow-Paced Exploratory Hike
This morning it was down to just the three of us - Deborah and Brent and I... but we all wanted to go, so away we went. It was a fantastic spring day - FINALLY!

We walked from Whitemud Park to Whitemud Ravine and on to Rainbow Valley Park. We passed Snow Valley and under the Whitemud, continuing south following the creek to a lovely lookout over an elbow in the creek where we had our snack and then returned the way we'd come.

Thanks, Deborah and Brent, for still being game, and getting me out on the wonderful day!

EOC - Edmonton River Valley Cleanup

The weather was warm and sunny on Sunday morning, as a team of EOC members joined an army of volunteers who set out to clean up the river valley. Our group took on Government House Park (north side of the river, immediately west of Groat Rd.), where we removed cigarette butts, bottle caps and other assorted river. Thankfully, none of us found anything completely disturbing, although a bicycle and a single rollerblade were also removed during our clean-up.

Thanks all for coming out!

ECC - American - The Bill Hicks Story at the Citadel\n

Three years in the making, American: The Bill Hicks Story brings the tale of one of modern culture’s most iconic heroes to the big screen. Much more than a comedian, Bill Hicks was and still is an inspiration to millions. His timeless comedy tackled the contradictions of America and modern life head on. But his unique gift was to tease apart the essence of religion, the dangers of unbridled government power and the double standards inherent in much of modern society, using nothing but his hilarious ideas and the uncompromising observational style that continues to resonate with successive generations. Like many who have a strong sense of their place in history, Hicks left a large unseen legacy; his collection of video recordings and hundreds of photographs became the starting point for this feature-length animated documentary. These raw materials were put together to recreate a full sense of Bill’s life, ambitions and achievements and a lasting testament as to why he will remain one of the enduring cultural cornerstones of our age.

Meet near the box office between 6:30 and 6:45. I will be holding an ECC sign. Film starts at 7:00.

More information at:
- Metro Cinema
- www.americanthemovie.com/\n

This film was really well done, and done in an interesting style. They wove three-dimensional-ish-ized still photos, old video footage, and current commentary from Bill Hicks' friends and family to tell the story of his life. And what an interesting life it was, too. I'd never heard of the guy before - I chose the film just based on a little flyer I was given at Yuk Yuks a couple weeks ago. Now I wish I'd known more about him earlier and I wish he were still around - he seems to have been a brilliant, thinking comic. My favorite kind.

Thanks very much to Brent, Mark, Ian and Sharon for joining me for the ECC's first event. I'm excited about having a new club again, and I'm excited about the things I'll see and do that I might not have otherwise, and the people I'll meet who I might not have otherwise.

2011-05-05: EOC - Roadside Bike Repair 100.5
Five brave souls came out to have a go at the secret workings of roadside bike repair..... Okay, maybe that's a bit dramatic. I'd like to thank everyone who came out May 5th. I hope you had a good time and learned at least one thing that you can use and that makes your cycling easier and more enjoyable. I will accept any suggestions or critisisms regarding future events that you care to make. I'd like to welcome Heather to the club, this being her first event. And I'd like to welcome Doug back to the club, this being his first successful event in a few years. I hope to see you both in the future.

2011-05-11: EOC - Aspen Gardens - Whitemud Park Slow-Paced Half-And-Half
Despite gale-force winds this week, 13 brave walkers showed up for the first-ever half-and-half walk. Down at the walking trails, the wind was but a breeze - not enough to be annoying, but enough to hold the mosquitoes at bay. Yay!!
The thirteen of us (plus two pooches) enjoyed a leisurely stroll south from Snow Valley, then returned to the cars where seven bid farewell and the six remaining continued on for the second half, heading north towards Whitemud Park.
It was a very lovely evening - thanks to all who came out!

2011-05-13: EOC - Lovely River Valley Cycle - Rail Line (Max. 16 KPH)
As I hoped, I got by with a little help from my friends. As this was my first Lovely River Valley Ride sans Brent, I relied heavily on attendees who were more familiar with the pathways than I am. Serge and Michel helped with route-finding and Michel helped with leading the way while I \"swept\" as is my usual preference. Thankfully, we received a bit of a respite from the howling winds that have been hammering us all week.

Thanks to all who came out - it was a fabulous evening and a great group!

2011-05-14: ECC - Keeping Peace at Living Room Playhouse
See Keeping Peace at Living Room Playhouse.

Canadians are proud of their position as peacekeepers around the world; it's seen as a noble, necessary duty. However, the exact details of these duties are not often considered, not to mention the effect that \"keeping the peace\" has on the minds and lives of the peacekeepers. Written and directed by Jon Lachlan Stewart, Keeping Peace explores what it feels like to be plunked smack-dab into a situation of intense tension and aggression, stuck between opposing forces on the verge of outright war. The protagonist, a Canadian peacekeeper named Clint (Ryland Alexander), attempts to reconcile the ghosts from his past and his drive to help people with the reality of his powerlessness.

Going to see this play was a last-minute idea (I didn't hear about it until just a couple days before). I am SO glad we went to see it!

Ryland Alexander, Candace Berlinguette and Ben Wheelwright were all amazing - not a weak one in the bunch. Their set was incredibly simple with just some strips of cloth and a couple of boxes.

The story was told with lots of quick images and changes in scenario, snapshot thoughts and emotions, full action (in a very tight space), with each of the three actors slipping in and out of various characters. I've seen people play multiple characters before, but this was the first time I've seen multiple actors crossing over and sometimes, briefly, playing characters normally played by another. Absolutely fantastic.

Thanks to the Livingroom Playhouse, the actors, the director, and anyone else who contributed to making this a fantastic show. And, of course, thanks to Carol for coming with me on such short notice! :)

2011-05-15: EOC - IMAX Movie: Born To Be Wild
Thanks to everyone who came along - it was a nice movie with many wonderful elephants and orangutans as the stars, although great credit must go to the humans too, for their dedication in caring for the orphaned animals. I especially enjoyed the scene with the elephants playing soccer - it reminded me of watching professional soccer in Scotland many years back.....

EOC - Lovely River Valley Explorer

We had a delay getting started today with one member having left her helmet at home in Calgary *cough* so we tried to get a loaner replacement which didn't pan out, so ended up buying one at Revolution. But once we were underway, it was a really great ride. We rode down McKinnon Ravine, along the river and across the Cloverdale Footbridge. We passed the Muttart Conservatory pyramids, and went up Mill Creek Ravine and then on to Tim Horton's for a rest/snack. We mostly re-traced our route on the way back except for staying on the north side of the river for a while. All together we put on 30km.

Thanks to Jorinda and Lynn for joining us from Calgary, and Andreas for joining us from Tucson. It was kind of a \"bring your friend on an event\" day. :)

2011-05-22: EOC - Day Hike - Waskehegan at Cooking Lk-Blackfoot Prov Pk
You have to love Alberta... from piles of snow to blustery winds to full-on scorching eye-lid sweating hot hot heat in two weeks.

We did a loop with Neon Lake, Spruce Hollow, Grouse and Lost Lake trail to the Meadow Shelter where we stopped for lunch. Closing the loop, we used Meadow, Waskahegan, and Lost Lake trail to get back for a total of 12.5km hiking. It's an easy route - an easy hike, but with the scorcher of a day we had, we were pretty wilty by the end and happy to have the wind and rain starting to roll in.

Linda pointed out that the trails would be fantastic for biking... next time we go I think we'll give that a try!

Thanks to everyone who came out for the day.

2011-06-16: ECC - TED Night

Join us for a night of TED. From Wikipedia: TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate \"ideas worth spreading.\"

Video 1: Barry Schwartz: Our Loss of Wisdom

Video 2: Jared Diamond: Why Societies Collapse

Arrive between 6:30 and 7:00 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:00. The video is approximately 20 minutes long. After we watch, we'll discuss for approximately 40 minutes (it'll depend on how much we want to discuss... it could be considerably less, but we'll cap it at no more than 60 minutes) Once we're done with the first video, we'll watch the second video (also approximately 20 minutes long) and discuss (same parameters).

Our home is small and humble... be prepared to get cozy... some of us will probably end up sitting on the floor.

\n

For a first TED Night, this was great! My start time was too early - next time we'll convene at 7:00 and start the first video at 7:30 so people aren't rushed. Otherwise, though... we watched a video, discussed, watched a video, discussed. It was awesome! I plan to do lots more of these!

2011-06-22: ECC - Music Appreciation Night

The Edmonton Culture Club's first Music Appreciation Night (aka MAN)! What is a MAN? It is an opportunity to get together with other music enthusiasts and be exposed to music that you might not otherwise know about. In other words, it's awesome.

I first started coordinating MANs with the Calgary Culture Club several years ago, but the true origins of my music appreciation events goes back to high school. My grade 10 drama teacher was a very cool guy, and one thing he would do is spend the first few minutes of every class playing some kind of interesting or unusual music for us and we would lay about on the floor just listening... and then we'd talk about the music... and then we would go on with drama class.

The Culture Club music appreciation events are meant to be a similar experience, although we usually sit rather than laying around, and we often visit and socialize during the music (unlike in grade 10 drama class).

All attendees submit up to 12 minutes of music that they enjoy and would like to share with others. Often the events have a theme, and sometimes they don't. When we have a theme, it might be genre-specific (ie. Blues MAN), it might be instrument-specific (ie. Sax MAN), or it might be more open to interpretation (ie. Perfect MAN, Hoochie Koochie MAN or Mystery MAN). The point is to share music you enjoy with others who you think would appreciate the opportunity to discover it. It's not a test! We'll kick off the ECC's music appreciation with an un-themed one - you can pick whatever you like to share.

On the night of the event, we'll convene at my home to share some snacks and listen to everyone's music submissions. For anyone who can't attend in person, there will be a webinar option.

Arrive at 6:30PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music at 7:00 with a quick round-robin to introduce our songs, then we'll listen to the music selections.

Our home is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.

Everyone must contribute 8-12 minutes of music for the event.

Webinar Option (if required):

  • I will use AnyMeeting.com to create a Webinar. Using this Webinar, we will be able to online chat (using their chat feature), and I will be able to share a window with you (ie. Wikipedia if we decide we want to look something up).
  • You will receive an e-mail with a link to the webinar. All you have to do is click the link, enter your name, location, and e-mail. Note that you do not have to enter real information here if you’re leery about giving your personal information.
  • When you first join the webinar, you’ll see a grey window in the middle of the screen, probably saying something like “Your Webinar. Nothing is currently being shared.” The “chat” window is at the very bottom underneath that. Scroll down to find the “chat” window and enter something in the box to let us know that you’re in and you’ve found the chat window. If you don't find the \"chat\" window, phone or e-mail me right away so we can get it sorted out.
  • You will NOT hear the music through the webinar. You will be responsible for having the music ready on your own computer (or stereo system), queued up and ready to begin, when we’re ready to start. We’ll start the music at the same time (and pause it together as well, if/when we take a break).
  • We will NOT have real-time voice as I’d have to set up a conference call, and frankly, I don’t want to have a telephone stuck to my head – I want to listen to the music comfortably. Sorry.

2011-06-25: EOC - Easy Mountain Bike - Waskehegan at Cooking Lk-Blackfoot Prov Pk
What an awesome day, and a fantastic adventure!! If I'd known it was going to drizzle most of the day, and downpour enthusiastically a couple of times, I would have cancelled. Fortunately, I trusted the weather forecast and didn't cancel... even though the forecast let us down, the day did not.

Even though I had posted this as an \"easy\" mountain bike trip, we did 25km total, and everyone was \"spent\" by the end of the trip. There were some very muddy patches, which were challenging enough for most, but especially so for me and Beth with our hybrid road tires (and somewhat for Andrea on her singlespeed).

Starting at Waskahegan Staging Area, we took Lost Lake, Grouse, Lost Lake, Siksika, Siksika route for the first half of the trip, lunching just before the intersection with Lost Lake. Turning left at Lost Lake, we followed that trail all the way back to the parking lot.

Most of us opted for drinks and food at Original Joe's in Sherwood Park after the ride, where four lucky explorers sampled Brent's last \"Cherry Ripe\" bar from Oz, and Keith scored \"gentleman of the day\" points for letting Andrea wrap herself up in a blanket from his car.

Thanks to everyone for coming out. Hope to see you all again soon!

2011-07-21: ECC - Edmonton Restaurant Tour: Rendezvous
Join us for dinner at Rendezvous Ethiopian.

Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal, eaten with your hands, and served up in the form of a stew containing lots of exotic spices. Each meal is accompanied by soft injera bread.

Ethiopian cuisine is unique by way of ceremony, flavour, colour and presentation. Wot, the national dish, comes in many varieties-meat, fish, poultry or vegetable of hot pepper and spice stew which are almost always accompanied by a fermented form of unleavened bread called Injera. Layers of the bread are geometrically positioned in Mesob, or basket table, and spoonfuls of the different types of the different types of Wot are then attractively portioned out on the top of them. Then it's finger time, tearing off a piece of Injera and wrapping it around a chosen piece of meat with savoury sauce.

For those not accustomed to such hot food whose ingredients include red and black pepper, cardamon, garlic and coriander, there is an alternative: Alicha is equally delicious but a lot milder and is usually made from chicken or lamb flavoured with green pepper and onion.

How to:

Note that ECC policy is to add 23% to the bill to cover 5% GST plus 18% gratuity. We try to get separate bills whenever we can, but that is usually not possible. The coordinator will calculate everyone's total based on what they ordered plus the 23%. If you disagree with this policy, please do not register for this event.\n

Rendezvous has been renamed Abyssinia. Same place, same cuisine, same great service from a new owner... larger portions! Yay for larger portions! And the proprietor makes the injera fresh from scratch. SO yummy! Thanks to everyone who came out. :)

2011-07-27: EOC - Easy/Beginner Roller Blade
It was a perfect evening for roller blading, and Neil was a great tour guide. He roller blades a LOT so he knows all the places to go. We started off on the path near Foote Field but then went out and rode a bunch of neighborhood streets including past a really cool little park, which Neil and Jocelyn skated through while the rest of us rested on some rocks.

Looping back to our starting point, we did a total of 6km.

Thanks to all who came out - it was a fantastic time!

2011-07-30: EOC - Easy-Intermediate Mountain Bike - Goldbar/Hermitage
It was a fabulous Sunny Saturday! Thirteen people cycled 23 kilometers in our glorious river valley. The light wind kept the mosquitoes at bay. We cycled on a mix of paved & gravel trails with some mud just for sport (& falling). The pace was pretty quick & some of the hills were killers.I think that most of us would do it again soon.

2011-08-04: EOC - Mayfair Golf Course, MacKenzie Ravine Half-And-Half
It was a great night for a walk... until the mosquitoes arrived! Hoards and hoards and clouds and clouds of them! After the first half, most of our group decided to bail, so the rest of us followed suit. Some went to the Urban Diner for snacks, which was great.

Thanks to all who came out - hope to see you again soon.

-- Rhonda

2011-08-08: EOC - Lovely River - Bikes and Bridges
It was a great evening for a bike ride... even a bike ride with hills. Brent's Bikes and Bridges route was awesome. We all had a great time, except for Michel who had to leave early with a pedal issue, and Glen at the end who had a bike rim that decided to eat all the tubes it could get its teeth on.

A few of us finished up the evening with refreshments on the patio at Brewsters.

2011-08-10: ECC - Durian in the Park

You've heard of durians (or maybe you haven't?), and here's your big chance to try one without bringing it into your home (oy the smell!) or paying the frightfully high cost of buying a whole one of your own (they run up to $50/ea at T&T).

Join us in the park to try the stinkiest fruit known to mankind. The unusual flavour and odor of the fruit have prompted many people to express diverse and passionate views ranging from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odor has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia. Food writer, Richard Sterling says \"its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock\". More information on Wikipedia.

In summer of 2009, Brent and Rhonda bought and tried a durian, chronicled in this fabulous video: Rhonda & Brent Eat a Durian. In summer of 2010, we bought a couple of them and hoodwinked our friends into coming over and trying it out with us (see photo above). Afterwards, we put what was left into the composter, and our neighbor ended up calling the gas company thinking they had a gas leak. This year, we would like to share the experience with you... if you think you're brave enough! The taste is much better than the smell... in fact, after her second try, Rhonda developed quite a taste for them and now loves them (Brent... not so much).

Bring your own beverage, and a snack to share. Anything mundane and edible welcome, but something more interesting and exotic to make our experience even that much more enjoyable would be great too.

OPTIONAL: If you would like your own \"Durian in the Park\" t-shirt (and who wouldn't?), please e-mail Rhonda to order. Cost is $30 (for t-shirt and printing), and I'll need to know your size. I'll have them made before the event to hand out at the event.

NOTE that our t-shirt order has already been placed for this year but you can STILL get one if you want by going to the Events section of our online store!

\n

\"Durian in the Park\" turned into \"Durian in the Condo\" because of the conditions, but we had a great time! My apologies to Paul, who has a very keen sense of smell and nearly died of the experience. Everyone(who had never tried it before) at least tried a little bit, which made the event a tremendous success. But they didn't try TOO much which means I have lots left over and even MORE of a success.

Thanks to all who came out. What a fun time!

2011-08-12: EOC - Perseids Meteor Shower
It was a beautiful evening, and with the help of my trusty iPhone, I counted 27 meteors until I left at 1:45.

We headed in on the boardwalks, and eventually settled on two of the viewing platforms, splitting the group in half. The half on the one platform left at about 12:30, and the rest of us stayed until 1:45.

When we first headed out there was quite a bit of cloud cover, which I found disappointing. Of course, there was also the promised full moon, which was definitely a meteor spoiler. But, as like the other two times I've done this, we saw lots of meteors between 10:00 and 11:30 and not as many after that. I think part of it was that cloud cover earlier in the evening. It helped keep the glow of the moon down and we saw lots of great meteors - some of them great bright streaks across the sky. As the cloud cover cleared off, we thought that would help, but all it did was increase the glow from the spoiler moon. It was so bright you could almost read a book by it. It was absolutely beautiful, but it put a real damper on meteor viewing.

Thanks to everyone who came out – it was a wonderful event.

Video 1: Tim Jackson's economic reality check
As the world faces recession, climate change, inequity and more, Tim Jackson delivers a piercing challenge to established economic principles, explaining how we might stop feeding the crises and start investing in our future.

Video 2: Paul Collier on the \"bottom billion\"
Around the world right now, one billion people are trapped in poor or failing countries. How can we help them? Economist Paul Collier lays out a bold, compassionate plan for closing the gap between rich and poor.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. The video is approximately 20 minutes long. After we watch, we'll discuss for approximately 40 minutes. Once we're done with the first video, we'll watch the second video (also approximately 20 minutes long) and discuss (same parameters).

2011-08-25: EOC - Easy/Beginner Rollerblade at Hawrelak Park
2011-08-27: EOC - Bike and Camp: Collingwood Cove, Strathcona Wilderness
Three newbies and two \"seasoned\" cycle tour-ers had a great trip meandering down from the Tempo gas station to Collingwood Cove then up to Strathcona Wilderness area. Strathcona Wilderness is a fantastic facility - very well organized, and they provide water jugs, firewood, an axe, and, if we had needed them, wheel barrows to haul our stuff (we just left everything on the bikes and pushed in). The weather and scenery were wonderful.

Returning the next day was also fantastic - a short (15km) ride out, with great weather and scenery again.

Thanks to everyone who came out!

2011-09-07: ECC - Dog MAN (Music Appreciation Night)

Dog MAN (Music Appreciation Night).

Choose music that you would like to share. If we have a theme, try to choose music that fits your interpretation of the theme.

On the night of the event, we'll convene at our home to share some snacks and listen to everyone's music submissions. We can accommodate up to 8 local folk, and up to 8 more will be allowed to attend \"virtually\". To attend virtually, you must submit your music by the cut-off the same as everyone else and all music submissions will be shared. Only the songs submitted by the people who attend in person will be played at the event (in the interest of time).

We crossed a couple of beaver dams and nobody fell in the water & we saw two beavers. We JUST made it to the cars before full darkness. Fair to say that everybody had a fantastic time! Michel

2011-10-22: ECC - Weibo's War at Metro Cinema
Wiebo's War tells the story of a Christian community at war with the oil and gas industry. Wiebo Ludwig is the prime suspect in a recent string of pipeline bombings. The bombings echo a campaign of sabotage he waged against the oil and gas industry in the 90s – barricading roads, blowing up wells and culminating in the unsolved death of a sixteen-year-old girl on his family's farm. The Ludwig family lives in northern Alberta, in the heart of Canada's oil patch. They came twenty-five years ago, wanting to live in more closely in accordance with their Christian beliefs, according to Scripture. They built their community in the wilderness with their own hands, not knowing that it lay on top of one of the largest undeveloped fields of natural gas on the continent. Other people take whatever buyout is on offer and make accommodation with the oil and gas industry. Wiebo and his family – after years of trying to deal with the industry, politicians and the media - went to war.

Wiebo Ludwig and filmmakers in attendance for the Sat, Oct 22 7pm screening.

2011-10-30: EOC - Multiple Events
EOC - Exploring McTaggart Nature Reserve\n

Some might say that it was a Triple Dammed Day but the weather was great , the people fabulous and the hike was interesting and exciting. After a double dam dare, we crossed two beaver dams into the area seldom traveled in a quest to reach the far end. At a point below Twin Brooks, after crossing a third dam, we met a fellow who told us that we were standing on a house. The House was owned by Sandy McTaggart whose name it is that The McTaggart Reserve is named after. It turns out that this concrete structure was a summer home of the McT family but was seldom used and often broken into. So they had it buried in dirt and the land was donated to the U 0f A for research. Some day the house may again be opened, for research, but at present the only clue is the hill that we were standing on and a small view of a concrete form. What a great day. Thanks for coming.

2011-11-01: ECC - Tucker and Dale vs Evil at Metro Cinema
Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they run into a group of preppy college kids who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw wielding killers and so their vacation takes a bloody & hilarious turn for the worse. Tucker and Dale are oblivious to the fact that the kids are trying to kill them, and the group continue to unintentionally kill themselves in the process, thinking that each death is by the hands of our two leads, when in reality all the guys want to do is help. Shot in Southern Alberta, fresh off its hit screening at this year's Edmonton International Film Festival, directed by actress Sally Fields' son - our city is privileged to screen Canada's only theatrical run of one of the best horror comedies to come out of the genre in recent years.

Meet inside the theatre lobby. Look for the coordinator wearing (or holding) a black and white club bandana.

Video 1: Alice Dreger: Is anatomy destiny?
Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and intersexed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?

Video 2: Elliot Krane: The mystery of chronic pain
We think of pain as a symptom, but there are cases where the nervous system develops feedback loops and pain becomes a terrifying disease in itself. Starting with the story of a girl whose sprained wrist turned into a nightmare, Elliot Krane talks about the complex mystery of chronic pain, and reviews the facts we're just learning about how it works and how to treat it.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. The video is approximately 20 minutes long.

2011-12-17: EOC - Backpack Terrain Obstacle Course Training Conditioning Adventure
With the mild winter we're having (so far), there wasn't much snow in the park to provide resistance... but we headed out anyway and made do with what we found. The fields in a lot of cases did provide quite a bit of resistance so we got a good workout tromping about. We then did some bushwhacking through the woods, which, although it was plenty fun, was not really that comparable to climbing the ROUSs on the West Coast Trail. Amulya feared we were lost for a bit, but when the threat of being eaten reared its head, he wisely calmed down and we easily found our way out of the bush.

A few people took their leave of the group, but most of us headed to the playground for the third bit of training - the playground (training for the ladders). We were having a tremendous amount of fun - this particular playground really is perfect for WCT training and we will be back, however, the day ended abruptly with an injury when Sri fell and injured her arm almost immediately after declaring how much fun she was having. BUMMER!! Get better soon, Sri, so we can see you back out on the trail.

For future WCT training events I probably would do things a little differently. The playground is great training for both the ladders and the ROUSs, so I'll probably skip the bushwhacking and focus on the playground... but hopefully no more injuries. Be careful out there folks...

We set out from the Peter Lougheed Info Centre and skied the first leg of trail together - gathering up at the first junction where we decided who would do the longer route and who would do the shorter. There was a bit of switching around, but ultimately, five people did the longer route and six did the shorter. We timed it perfectly as the faster folks overtook us on the last .25km returning to the info centre building where we enjoyed some lunch/snacks and conversation. The six from the shorter group went for sushi at Sakana Grill after, while the five faster folk eschewed the sushi.

Thanks to all for joining us for the day - it was fantastic!
